About us
People Ave Maria Consultancy founder and principal, Nigel McGothigan (RN MACN FACORN), is a registered nurse with over 25 years of diverse clinical expertise, 15 of those within the aged care sector.
Nigel has practiced in his field of expertise nationally and internationally. He understands the diverse cultural and linguistic needs of staff and residents. Having been employed in multifaceted educative, supervisory and management positions, including as a chief executive officer; Nigel has a deep knowledge and appreciation for residential aged care facilities and community care sectors.
Nigel has served as a clinical advisor to the Australian Council of Health Care Standards and to not-for-profit organisations. Nigel’s background in bioethics has seen him sit on various medical ethics committees both nationally and internationally.
Nigel’s ongoing commitment to evidence-based best practice nursing has seen him complete post graduate studies in gerontology, education and business.
In the aged care sector Nigel has successfully complied with four ACFI validations with nil downgrades and overseen ACFI ‘uplifts’ in four facilities in excess of $600,000 for each individual facility. He has also overseen successful accreditation of three facilities with 44/44 outcomes achievements.
Nigel’s vision for Ave Maria Consultancy is to apply his extensive ‘on the floor’ experience to assist aged care providers. His unique skills set can help clients:
- educate and enable staff to overcome barriers to understanding and applying the ACFI process, and
- align individual residents’ care needs with staff ratios through evidence-based best practice care planning.
Nigel is known for his ethical, caring and collaborative approach to aged care provision and has a reputation for resourcefulness, exceptional clinical and interpretation skills; and passion and commitment to continuously improving the sector’s standard of care.

AMC name Ave Maria (Hail Mary), the consultancy’s name, honours Mary, the Mother of God, to whom it looks for guidance and grace in ‘walking with’ individual facilities and staff members to provide compassionate and dignified care that is integral to the spiritual dimensions of being human.
